Cobalt Crush

If you walked into my closet-of-old, you would have been confronted with four colors: black, white, gray and denim. Every shirt-in-awhile, you would have stumbled upon something yellow or red, but its presence would have felt entirely out of place. As a recent college graduate, my budget was limited, and I couldn't bare to spend my hard-earned teacher dollars {which didn't come easy} on something that {I thought} could only be worn once. I'm also nearly positive that I rotated five outfits through every five workdays for my first year as a working professional {classy}. My new-found appreciation for color-blocking, pattern-playing and monochrome-matching has led to a deep appreciation for anything not of the black-and-white family.

My husband and I enjoy playing random psyche games like "Would you rather...?" and "If you could only...?" to establish unrealistic parameters for our lives. Questions include: Would you rather be forced to eat your own toenails or have your eyebrows shaved off? If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what song would it be? Obviously {or hopefully}, we would never be forced to make these decisions, but the answers are so comically amusing - and most times, require such intense thought - that we get lost for hours in a sea of inquiry. I can recall one question, however, that required only a split second of decision: If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be?

Blue. Boom. Done.

From cerulean to navy, I haven't met a blue I didn't like {which very much bodes in my favor as a Kentucky resident}, and I'm currently crushing hard on cobalt. There is a certain radiance and richness to it that screams neon without the eye-piercing dazzle {although I also love me a good neon every now and again}. This bright blue is my new black.

She a Gold Digger

Once upon a time {in a land far, far away}, I hated gold jewelry. It distinctly reminded me of something that my grandmother {or any grandmother} would wear, and I couldn't help but stare at it in disgust. When I hit my mid-twenties, I started singing a {much different} tune. Now, if it's gold, I'm probably wearing it {or at least wishing that I was wearing it}. Something about gold pieces just screams sexy-chic, and they have the ability to make any outfit go from drab to fab. Gold. Bam. Insta-droolworthiness. I have five staple gold goodies that I rotate {rather religiously} through my wardrobe:

1. Gemvara Twine Wedding Band :: I am absolutely in love with my vintage, 100-year-old solitaire diamond engagement ring. When I started shopping for my wedding band, I knew that I wanted something simple that would take nothing away from the diamond's sheer wow-ness. Since the setting was platinum, I also knew that I wanted something gold. Yes, some people naysayed my optimism in mixing metals, but I could not be happier with the selection. The simplicity of the gold twine band next to the power of my stunning solitaire {truly} never gets old.

2. Michael Kors Jet Set Watch :: This watch is the staple piece of my jewelry collection. You are hard-pressed to find me wearing anything else. My favorite part about it is, once again, its sheer simplicity. There are no numbers. There are no diamonds. It is just a perfect shade and finish of gold that compliments every possible outfit combination.

Monochrome Blue + Gold // BDG colorblock Chambray {similar here and here}, J. Crew Tippi sweater + Cece flats, Gap velvet skinny jeans & Michael Kors Jet Set watch

3. Inga Creations Tusk Necklace :: Aspen-designer Emily Gustafson loves gold just as much as I do, which means that I keep her jewelry line on heavy repeat. My newest favorite piece is an antler strung on a gold chain wrapped perfectly in gold wire {totally Colorado, right?}. Enter code "PUPSANDPUMPS" at checkout, and she'll treat you to 20% off your order {woohoo!}.

{or} Dressed Down.

4. MIA Limited Edition Elana Flats :: I am semi-embarrassed to admit that I had to trade in my Tory Burch Reva flats a few months ago. The elastic backs were digging into my heels so badly that, by the end of the day, I was sporting them as clogs. Plus, I over-pronate ridiculously far {running lingo for "my ankles roll in"}, and anything with an elastic back just doesn't bode in my favor. I started a mad hunt for a pair of black flats with gold detail, and I found these gems. Love them. Plus, super comfortable {in 1/2 size up}.

5. Madewell Skimmer Flats {similar here} :: Finally, my Dorothy shoes. While clicking these suckers together won't get me home after a long night out, the gold glitter stays perfectly in tact, and they are sure to garner plenty of compliments {trust}.

Summer Wedding Secrets

I am not a sappy wedding fan {by any means}. In fact, I am what you might call an anti-traditional wedding-ist. I appreciate tradition, but I have a hard time accepting tradition for tradition's sake; however, I am always touched by how people decide to vow themselves to each other before God - so much so that I have truly come to appreciate nuptials on a much deeper level than ever before. One, it reminds me of the commitment I have made to my own husband {which is always worth being reminded}. Two, I enjoy seeing couple's creativity lived out in a very finite period of time. Three, I love not only dressing for the occasion {obviously}, but I also love seeing how everyone else dresses for the occasion. Weddings are such a unique blend of fashion statements that I can't help but get lost evaluating ensembles {in the midst of making a fool of myself on the dance floor and eating entirely way too much wedding cake}.

Jordan and I had two weddings slated for this summer. The first was an outdoor event in a beautiful park. The second was in a gorgeous downtown church. Surprisingly, I have found that any summer wedding requires layers. Outdoor weddings always bring the possibility of rain, and indoor weddings in the southern state of Kentucky usually entail an {overly} abundant amount of air conditioning. My Forever 21 cotton blazer worked perfectly on both occasions.

I feel blessed to have shared in a special moment with two very dear sets of friends. More importantly, I witnessed the greatest father-daughter dance of all time {"Butterfly Kisses" gets dominated at the 1:40-mark}, and Jordan and I made insta-wedding friends who owned the photo booth with us like it had never been owned before {props rule!}.

Style Stats: Germany

On a river cruise, there are not a lot of opportunities to go out and explore port cities in the evening, so the highlight night of our trip involves carnival rides among German locals. When we docked in Wurzburg at 10 PM {the night before our pizza adventure}, we saw a neon flame in the distance drawing us in like moths: a large pole jutting into the night sky with neon swings flying in circles around its center. Whatever was going on in this place, we knew we had to be a part of it. What we found was an epic festival in honor or St. Killian. We chowed down on German pretzels and bratwursts and prepared ourselves for an evening of barf-inducing rides. The best part: it was ladies' night. We were privy to a throng of ladies, young and old, walking around in traditional German threads {called dirndl - don't ask me how to pronounce this}. These dresses were taken right out of a traditional Disney movie {think Snow White}. It was unreal {and absolutely fantastic for this fashionista to witness}. As we travel around Germany, I am confronted on the daily with store fronts showcasing these dresses {yes, I have been tempted to buy one}. I am just amazed at the preservation of such a cultural masterpiece. What would Americans wear if such a tradition existed? I imagine something like outfits from our colonial period {think Gone with the Wind}. I can not stop chuckling at the idea of such a sight.

When it comes to modern style in Germany, black tights, neon and colored denim are still taking over the world {in case you were worried}. I have my sights now set on the fashionista icon stationed at the end of our cruise: Paris! So close, yet so far away.

For the Love of Pizza

When you get a food craving in a foreign country, you're pretty much {for lack of a better term} screwed. You can search and search to find an authentic restaurant, but more often than not, you will find the food and it will taste like a washed-out cloned copy of your original heart's desire. Even our staple fast food restaurants from the states will have an international flare in foreign countries. Ironically enough, I will not touch a McDonald's in America, but give me a McDonald's in Prague and I will run to it like the Prodigal Son.

When you get a food craving on a cruise ship in a foreign country, you are even more {for lack of a better term} screwed. Your craving is heightened by the sheer isolation of eating only what is on the ship; plus, Jordan and I are doing a river cruise, so our meals are very regimented. At this point, we have been on the ship a week, which is nearly an eternity in our life without consuming a single slice of pizza. While enjoying a rather fancy dinner on the boat while docked in Wurzberg, Germany the other night, Jordan comes up the most brilliant plan of his entire life {aside from marrying me, of course}: we will order a pizza to the ship. Yes, brilliant. Jordan pulls out his iPhone, Googles pizza, and within seconds me have a variety of choices. Jordan dials the closest location, and after being passed off to a gentleman who could understand the smallest amount of English, my husband asks for "the largest pizza on the menu." The gentleman responds with "46." What?! A 46-inch pizza?! I mean, yes, but how in the world do they even transport a pizza that size? Will it be done in time {we were set to depart within the next 30 minutes}? No, we can't order a pizza that size. Jordan orders the next size down, gives the gentleman his cell phone number, and hangs up the phone.

At this point, everyone starts taking verbal bets on whether or not the pizza will actually arrive before the ship departs {captains don't wait on anything, even pizzas}, and we sit. Finally, a beacon of light comes towards us: two gentlemen with a pizza box approach the side deck where we are waiting. There is only one small problem: the ship is prepared for departure and the docks have been raised. There is one dock sticking out from the boardwalk, but it juts into an unknown room. The hotel manager generously gives Jordan the number, and the two run down to the room like schoolboys. Knock. Knock. Who's there? A couple from our home city that we had just met upon boarding the ship! The wife {thankfully} allows the two to enter, and the pizza man runs down to the dock to make the exchange. Jordan slides open the glass window. The pizza man gets to the end of the dock. And, holy {expletive}, the ship is setting sail. Slowly by surely, we are getting farther from the boardwalk. Jordan climbs out of the room, stands on a small metal plank on the side of the ship, and reaches as far as he can for this little box {later we found out that the hotel manager was humbly grabbing the butt of his pants to keep him from falling into the water} while exchanging an overgenerous amount of Euro for the pizza man's efforts. Success! Pizza victory. Craving satiated.

This has now become the joke of the ship {as if anything less was expected} since our program director relived the entire moment in front of the whole ship's audience the following evening post-dinner {of course, Jordan and the hotel manager re-enacted the full scene of events}. The only sad part was our moment of stupidity in thinking that we would get a 4-foot-tall pizza. Europeans use the metric system. Our pizza was only 32 centimeters {12-inches!} of goodness. Bummer.

Married, but Dating.

When I got engaged, I thought my dating days were over. When I got married, the word "dating" flew out of my vocabulary altogether. Until {cue dramatic music}, I realized that my husband and I did not have couple friends. I had my friends {and not very many of them at that because I am a transplant} and he had his friends. We had yet to make OUR friends. I realize that this might be a very foreign concept to many of you {especially you high school and college sweethearts who have had the same friends since like, well, forever}, but it has become very real to us newlyweds. We both {quickly} realized that we needed to start dating {couples, of course}. Don't get me wrong, I very much like my husband's friends. They are all very nice, respectful men that I would recommend to any single lady. The problem: I know no single ladies. Most of my friends are married, and even more of them have  rugrats in tow. In fact, most of the couples that we had gradually become friends with have children; this posed another problem, not because we don't love kids {because we do}, but trying to match schedules and babysitters and nap times is just not an easy thing {as if life isn't hard enough just trying to manage our individual selves}. So, we hit the dating pool, and we immediately found a couple from our Bible study at church. They lived by us, they were our age {Jordan and I take pride in starting our life together at a much later age than most of the Mid-western folks} AND they were getting married in a month {so, no babies}. I mean, these three points alone could suffice for even a mediocre relationship. Fortunately, it has grown to be much more than a mediocre relationship. You couples out there know how hard it is to find couple friends where the girl and the girl get along as well as the guy and the guy. The minute Clint started talking politics and Amy mentioned doing a triathlon, I knew this was going to be the start of something wonderful {cue sappy music}. Long story short, we love them, and we feel fortunate to have gone to their wedding last month. Hopefully, just hopefully, they don't start popping out kids before we do.

PS - I am aware that I should have included a photo with me + hubby + our new couple friends, but that would just be too perfect. It's too early to be posting such things {like changing-your-relationship-status-on-Facebook-too-early kind of shenanigans}. Stay tuned, friends.

Celebrating Independence

I love July 4th. I love it for the sheer fact that we are celebrating America's independence, but I also like to take time to appreciate my personal independence. God has given me a lot to be thankful for this year, but all of those thanksgivings have come through some serious trial & error {not something I'm USUALLY thankful for}. I mean, getting married in and of itself is a seriously TRYING time, people {phew!}. I finally feel at peace with areas of my life that used to bother me so greatly, however, and for that, I am extremely thankful. I can only control myself. I can only control myself. As a teacher, this is a hard mantra to admit. I dropped one of my former players off at college on Sunday {I coach a varsity girls' basketball team}, and I was flooded with a plethora of memories. One, I realized that I had probably never thanked my mom enough for actually putting up with me while moving into my dorm. Two, time flies, and it only means something if you're learning through the process. I'm thankful for learning, and I'm thankful for the freedom to learn in such an amazing country.

Plus, I LOVE red, white & blue {no matter the day and no matter the occasion}.
